Apple unveiled its long-awaited artificial intelligence strategy at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, officially announcing “Apple Intelligence.” This new personal intelligence system deeply integrates powerful generative AI models across Apple’s apps and devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Siri Gets Major AI Upgrade with ChatGPT Integration

As part of Apple’s push into AI, Siri received a significant upgrade. The voice assistant is now more deeply integrated into iOS, appearing as an interactive orb that users can tap to activate. Siri leverages large language models to better understand natural language requests, keep track of context in conversations, and perform tasks within and across apps.

Additionally, Apple announced that Siri will integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT to offer enhanced responses. With user permission, Siri will seamlessly tap into ChatGPT to provide more detailed answers to certain queries. This integration will be available for free and without requiring an account.

Apple Intelligence Focuses on Privacy and Personalization

Unlike some other tech giants rushing into AI, Apple is taking a differentiated approach with Apple Intelligence. The company emphasized “personal intelligence” over artificial intelligence, focusing more on customizing experiences to individual users rather than wide-scale automation.

Apple also underscored its commitment to user privacy, stating most processing will happen directly on devices rather than in the cloud. For cloud-based processing, Apple is introducing Private Compute Cloud with strict access controls. This focus on privacy while delivering helpful, personalized AI could set Apple apart from competitors like Google and Amazon.

AI for the Rest of Us

Apple IntelligenceA central theme emerging from Apple’s WWDC keynote is making AI accessible, helpful, and unintimidating for everyday users. The company is determined to leverage advanced machine learning while avoiding technical jargon.

“We want to extend the privacy and security of your iPhone into the cloud,” said Apple’s Craig Federighi. This balancing act underscores Apple’s strategy of focusing AI on enhancing user experiences across native apps rather than as a platform play.

Emphasis on On-Device Processing and Private Cloud Compute

While unveiling Apple Intelligence, Apple stressed privacy protections such as on-device processing and its new Private Compute Cloud. Keeping data processing on iPhones and iPads as much as possible, and implementing strict access controls for cloud-based operations, aims to give users more transparency and control.

This approach stands apart from competitors by ensuring personal data stays private even when tapping into advanced machine learning algorithms.

Integration of AI Across Native Apps

Apple showcased how Apple Intelligence will integrate into apps like Siri, Mail, Messages, and Photos to provide helpful features while keeping user data secure. Siri will gain expanded intelligence to handle multi-step tasks and requests while Mail can generate quick replies. Messages gains more expressive tools while Photos can recognize people and objects for searching.

The breadth of Apple’s ecosystem means users will encounter the benefits of AI across various touchpoints while enjoying privacy safeguards. This pervasive, friendly approach to AI could become a key competitive advantage.

iOS 18: A More Personalized Experience

Apple introduced iOS18 at WWDC 2024, previewing major updates that further customize and personalize the iPhone experience. The new operating system release builds on Apple’s focus of putting “intelligence and utility” directly into users’ hands.

Home Screen Customizations and Widgets

iOS 18 introduces new ways for users to tailor their iPhone’s look and layout to their liking. Home screen widgets can now be placed anywhere, while icons automatically arrange themselves around chosen wallpapers and themes. The more personalized home screen reflects Apple’s ethos of building devices that conform to users rather than the other way around.

Enhanced Privacy Features

Privacy remains a major emphasis in iOS 18, with upgrades like the ability to lock individual apps with Face ID or passcodes. Apple also unveiled encrypted contact sharing to give users more control over which apps can access contacts. These privacy-focused features complement Apple Intelligence by safeguarding personal data.

New Messaging Capabilities

The Messages app gains new features including edit, undo, and mark unread for more flexible conversations. Users can also schedule messages to be sent at specific times. Additionally, Apple introduced Genmoji — customized emoji generated using Apple’s machine learning capabilities.

Deepening Siri Integrations

With ChatGPT integration, Siri gains expanded AI capabilities while still providing seamless access without new accounts or barriers. Tight integration between iOS 18 and enhanced Siri intelligence aims to help iPhone users accomplish more while enjoying greater privacy protections.

Beyond the iPhone: AI Across Apple Ecosystem

While much of the WWDC 2024 spotlight centered on iOS 18 and the iPhone, Apple also showcased major AI updates across its broader ecosystem of devices. The expansive integration of Apple Intelligence exemplifies the company’s unified approach to user experiences.

iPadOS 18: Smarter Multitasking

Apple Devices

iPadOS 18 adds a new Calculator app with Apple Pencil integration, allowing users to write equations for automatic solving. Additionally, the iPad operating system leverages machine learning for advanced handwriting recognition and spellcheck features called Smart Script. These capabilities aim to turn the iPad into an even more seamless replacement for pen and paper.

watchOS 11: Personalized Health Tracking

The new watchOS 11 release brings AI-powered health tracking and personalized dashboard recommendations. Users can gain insights into metrics like respiratory rate and receive guidance when multiple health indicators fall outside expected ranges. As with iOS 18, watchOS 11 focuses more on learning user patterns rather than imposing generalized health advice.

macOS Sequoia: iPhone Mirroring and Smarter Safari

For Mac users, macOS Sequoia introduces the ability to mirror iPhone screens directly on the desktop. Safari also gains AI-powered highlights that summarize key information from web pages. Enhanced continuity across devices remains a priority, as Apple brings its latest machine learning to more platforms.

visionOS 2 Takes Vision Pro Further

Alongside software updates for existing devices, Apple unveiled visionOS 2 featuring major upgrades for its Vision Pro mixed reality headset. The advanced capabilities aim to cement Vision Pro as the next evolution of spatial computing.

Intuitive New Gestures and Immersive Displays

visionOS 2 introduces new hand gestures for more intuitive navigation and control of Vision Pro. Apple is also enhancing visual experiences with support for spatial photos that render images in 3D. Users can additionally experience an ultrawide virtual display equivalent to multiple large monitors.

Expanded International Availability

While Vision Pro launched just this year, Apple is aggressively expanding availability outside the U.S. New countries where Vision Pro will be available include China, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the UK.

The rapid introduction of visionOS 2 and international growth signals Apple’s long-term commitment to blending AI with augmented and virtual reality. As Apple connects its ecosystem with Vision Pro, the company could gain first-mover advantage in spatial computing thanks to tight integration between world-class hardware, software, and now on-device intelligence.

Apple Intelligence Unlocks New App Possibilities

The extensive AI updates announced at WWDC 2024 promise to enable developers to build the next generation of intelligent apps. Apple is providing robust toolkits for integrating machine learning while empowering developers to shape the future of personal computing experiences.

Leveraging Apple Intelligence in Innovative Ways

Developers can tap into the on-device Apple Intelligence framework to integrate powerful features like image generation, semantic search, and natural language processing. Support for Private Compute Cloud also gives developers access to additional large language models with strict access controls to ensure user privacy.

The breadth of Apple’s AI platform means developers can focus more on creating delightful experiences rather than building their own models.

ChatGPT Integration Opens New Doors

Siri’s integration with ChatGPT also presents new opportunities for developers. Apps can work in concert with Siri intelligence to provide robust voice-driven interactions leveraging ChatGPT’s capabilities. As Apple expands the Siri API, developers will enjoy more flexibility in harnessing AI to deliver next-level app functionality.

For app developers, Apple’s advancements unlock an abundance of opportunities to craft the next generation of apps with immersive AI capabilities. Apple is not only democratizing access to powerful AI toolkits, but providing a foundation developers can confidently build upon knowing Apple prioritizes user trust.

Dallas iOS app developers are excited that iOS 11 is finally here — and with it, ARKit, Apple’s new augmented reality platform. Because apps developed with ARKit are now available to anyone with an iPhone 6 or later, it is the biggest AR platform in the world. Ever since Apple announced the platform at WWDC back in June, developers have had the chance to put together apps that showcase and experiment with AR technology. Now that iOS 11 has arrived, we finally get the chance to check out this new wave of augmented reality apps.

One of the cool things about AR is that it has the ability to close the gap between shopping in the store and shopping online. In the case of big purchases like furniture, AR offers some advantages that you can’t find at the store. While iOS app developers haven’t yet figured out how to let someone virtually test sit on a couch or test sleep on a mattress, they have figured out how to use AR to let consumers see what a new couch or bed looks like in their houses. IKEA has launched an app using ARKit that brings more than 2,000 pieces of its furniture into users’ (digital) living rooms. If only they could create an app that would simulate the taste of those meatballs…

Another similar app comes from interior design and home improvement platform Houzz. The freshly updated app, appropriately enough called View in My Room 3D, enables users to view a catalog of a half a million pieces of furniture or interior design elements in 3D images of rooms in their house. Harnessing the power of ARKit, the app is better able to replicate objects’ textures and the ambiance of the room. Houzz has boasted some pretty impressive results from earlier versions of the app, claiming that customers are 11 times more likely to make a purchase after toying around with View in My Room 3D. iOS app developers expect that the improved AR will only increase sales further — and draw in new users who just want to fantasize about their perfect homes.

The post Here Comes the New iPhone (Please Let There Be Surprises) first appeared on Dogtown Media.]]>

The day has finally come: it’s September 12th and tech reporters and Apple cognoscenti will soon pile into the brand new Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park campus to hear all about those new iPhones. But as any iPhone app developer who has not been in a coma over the past few months will tell you, they are expecting relatively few surprises. Leaks have always been a big part of the Apple hype cycle, but this time it really seems like all the good stuff is already out on the table. Of course, the loyal Apple fans are still holding out hope for some twists (and are excited to finally get their hands on the new iPhones). But there is a sense heading into the event that the company is not going to blow our minds as it celebrates the tenth anniversary of the phone that changed it all.

By now, it’s no secret to iPhone app developers that there are three new iPhones on the way: the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the $1,000+ luxury iPhone X. The latter’s steep price can be blamed in part on the crisp OLED display courtesy of Samsung (according to reliable sources). These displays are also rumored to be in short supply, which means there could be delays on the X’s release. Apple is also ditching bezels for the most part, with only the notch for the front-facing camera breaking up the sleek display.

Los Angeles iPhone app developers expect a lot of hype around the 3D face-scanning technology and the ARKit, given that they are among the biggest and flashiest changes to the iPhone family. We will be most impressed by the face-scanning technology if it turns out to be secure enough to connect with Apple Pay — a stretch, perhaps, but it’s something that has repeatedly come up in gossip surrounding the new iPhone. As for ARKit, it will give Apple “the largest AR platform in the world.” When ARKit was unveiled at this year’s WWDC, there was no indication that Apple views the camera as the new automatic search function like Google and Facebook do. But they clearly believe augmented reality is the future, and the demos so far have been pretty exciting.

Plenty more will be revealed in the next couple hours, including stuff about 4K Apple TVs, the new Watch, the HomePod, and more. Maybe there will be a few surprises for iPhone app developers. It would be nice if the reports from the event didn’t read the same as the tired previews. After all, this is the tenth anniversary for the iPhone, a product that really did change the world.

The post Apple (Finally) Announces Its AR Platform at WWDC first appeared on Dogtown Media.]]>

Everyone in tech seems to agree that the future is in augmented reality, but a clear AR leader has yet to emerge. Google and Facebook have a head start on the competition, but Apple threw its hat in the ring at this week’s WWDC with ARKit, its new AR platform. Apple can now claim that it has “the largest AR platform in the world.” This is great news for iPhone app developers looking to break into AR and its seemingly endless possibilities.

The ARKit makes the imaging and tracking built into iPhones and iPads available to developers instead of forcing them to create their own from scratch. It utilizes something Apple is calling “world tracking,” a form of machine learning that maps out various points in an environment and tracks those points so that perspective and scale change accordingly as users move their device around. It’s impressive, but it’s not quite the AR breakthrough iPhone app developers have been craving — at least not yet. Unlike Google Lens or the AR ambitions Facebook unveiled at this year’s F8, Apple hasn’t emphasized the camera as a sort of automatic search function, which seems to be one of the most potentially revolutionary aspects of AR. Overall the WWDC announcement was surprisingly light on prophetic speechifying about the ways AR and machine learning are going to change the world.

But maybe Apple knows that kind of talk ultimately doesn’t matter, especially if it has its long game in place. As soon as iOS 11 hits, Boston iPhone app developers will be able to deliver their AR creations to iPhone and iPad users. People won’t need to buy a new device akin to Google Glass or Snap Spectacles — their AR device is already in the palm of their hands. Google’s Tango project is not on every Android device, and developers working on AR for Facebook are exclusively tied to the Camera app. ARKit will be on every iPhone or iPad running iOS 11, and developers will be able to incorporate its features into independent apps. All of this bodes well for Apple in the chess game that is the AR field.

The post The HomePod is Apple’s Smart Speaker (Emphasis on Speaker) first appeared on Dogtown Media.]]>

Most iPad app developers were expecting big news about a Siri speaker at this year’s WWDC, and that’s (sort of) what they got with yesterday’s announcement of the brand new HomePod. Apple developers and fanatics felt such an announcement was long overdue. While the Amazon Echo and Google Home have become surprise hits, pushing smart speakers into the mainstream, Apple has hung back on releasing its own device. And now that the HomePod is here, it’s not quite what internet of things industry observers were expecting.

For one thing, Apple knows its late to the game and has chosen to position their latest gadget as more of a speaker than a Siri-centric smart home device. Apple’s marketing team realized that audiophiles aren’t playing music through their Echos and Homes and that Sonos speakers don’t have the kind of voice assistant functionality that consumers crave right now. So they have brilliantly pitched the HomePod as the great smart home speaker the IoT market lacks. It’s a move that iPad app developers have to admire.

The HomePod will run $349 and should be available in the U.S., U.K., and Australia by the end of the year. The plump, cylindrical speaker’s sound adjusts according to the dimensions of its environment so that your music can fill any room. It also includes a “Musicologist” feature that essentially turns Siri into your personal DJ and musical encyclopedia. For Chicago iPad app developers looking for something more along the lines of the Echo or Home, the HomePod should meet their needs too. Consumers will be able to activate smart home devices or check the weather by talking to Siri through the device.

It will be interesting for iPad app developers to see if Apple’s gambit of emphasizing the HomePod’s speaker functions will pay off. The device was announced at WWDC on the same day that news broke of major Google Home outages, which suggests that maybe it isn’t too late for a new smart speaker to come in and dominate the market. But with the recent announcement of the Echo Show, with its game-changing screen component, it may seem that Apple is a little behind the times.

The post What Can iOS App Developers Expect at This Year’s WWDC? first appeared on Dogtown Media.]]>

This year’s Apple Worldwide Developer Conference kicks off next week, and as always, iOS app developers are buzzing about what will be unveiled this year. Lately it seems that Apple has been taking a drubbing in the press for falling into a post-Jobs innovation slump, so the pressure is on this year to stir up excitement over all things Apple. So what is expected to drop at this year’s WWDC? Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from the rumor mill:

iOS 11

Since the conference focuses on software over hardware, we most likely won’t get to see the iPhone 7 or that 10-year anniversary phone at WWDC. But we might get an idea of their capabilities from what is revealed about iOS 11. Many iOS app developers are expecting a beefed-up Siri, a dark mode for the display, more emphasis on the zany new video app Clips, and updates to iMessage, FaceTime, and Apple Pay. The latest MacOS update is also almost guaranteed to turn up, most likely equipped with more features from iOS than ever before.

New laptops, computers, and tablets

If industry gossip is to be believed, the MacBook lineup may be getting an upgrade at this year’s WWDC. The latest MacBook Pros sold very well, but have generally been considered a letdown. Apple may redeem itself at the conference with a new MacBook Pro — and infuriate a lot of people who just dropped a pretty penny on the most recent inferior model. The relatively affordable MacBook Air hasn’t been refreshed; a new model would be very exciting for the cash-strapped Apple fan.

The company has confirmed that new desktop iMacs are on the way in 2017, but it’s unclear whether or not they will make an appearance at WWDC. iOS app developers are crossing their fingers that a new Mac Pro will be announced, especially now that Apple has admitted that its latest model was a colossal disappointment.

We’ll also be on the lookout for new iPads, including a new iPad Pro, a line that also hasn’t been refreshed since 2015.

A Home for Siri?

One of the pieces of hardware industry observers are hoping to see at this year’s WWDC is a Siri speaker for smart homes. After the enthusiastic response Amazon’s new Echo Show received last month, it feels downright necessary for Apple to get in on the smart home device competition. They have been testing prototypes for a voice assistant speaker since last year — will they have one ready for the conference?

WatchOS 4

Wearables are almost always linked to health and wellness, and this year many Apple experts are anticipating new healthcare functions for the Apple Watch. Tim Cook has recently spoken about Apple’s efforts to develop a non-invasive glucose monitor for the Watch for diabetics, but most iPhone app developers expect that that feature might not be ready in time for WWDC. We’re more likely to see sleep-tracking incorporated into the device, especially after Apple’s recent acquisition of Beddit. It would also be great if the company finally revealed its watch face store.

Apple TV

A tvOS update should be announced, likely with support for Apple’s direct competition Amazon Video. After Hulu and YouTube have announced cable-like packages in recent months, many are wondering if Apple will do the same. We also wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a new 4K Apple TV.

Apple Park and the environment

One thing that is surely a lock at WWDC is that Apple will be talking a lot about its sustainability efforts and its impressive new campus. Apple is one of the tech giants that has stood up to the Trump administration’s outright hostility to efforts to curb climate change; expect the company to continue seize the moment to remind the world that its fighting the good fight.

If San Francisco iOS app developers know anything about WWDC, it’s that there are no guarantees. Apple is going to want to surprise us this year — and we love surprises.

The post Apple HomeKit Gaining Interest with iOS App Developers first appeared on Dogtown Media.]]>

With smart devices beginning to make major inroads in the consumer market, Apple is reportedly on the verge of releasing a new app designed to help people manage their connected devices more easily. The app is said to be called “Home,” and it is believed to provide a single platform for the streamlined management of all connected HomeKit devices. Examples of such devices include security systems, smoke detectors, garage doors, door and window locks, thermostats and home comfort devices, and many others.

While some have predicted that Apple will launch Home at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which will be held in San Francisco in July, others aren’t so sure. Some media sources are reporting that Home is still in a relatively early stage of development, suggesting that a July unveiling is unlikely at best and a long shot at worst.

Further speculation revolves around whether or not Home is even intended to be a consumer app at all, or whether it will lurk in the architecture of the iOS platforms on which it will run. The company has earned a reputation for being able to make its software products work like magic, hiding operational complexities in the background while presenting users with clean, intuitive and simplified interfaces.

Apple’s Home app could prove to be big news for the Internet of Things app development landscape. Right now, it appears as though Home is headed for the consumer market, and that means end users will have to add it to their mobile devices. Some people will, while others won’t, and that means its functionality and applicability won’t be as universal as the company might like.

For mobile app developers in New York City and around the world, the success or failure of Apple’s HomeKit will mark a watershed moment in the evolution of the Internet of Things. The platform’s fate could depend on which devices support it and which devices don’t, and the end result will have a major impact on Internet of Things app development over the course of the next few years.

iOS 6: A Smarter Siri, Facebook-Integration and No More Google Maps https://www.dogtownmedia.com/ios-6-siri-facebook-maps/ Mon, 11 Jun 2012 21:11:19 +0000 http://www.dogtownmedia.com/?p=598 Apple introduced iOS 6 at the WWDC today. The new mobile operating system will launch this fall, and includes some smart changes for Siri, Facebook integration.

The post iOS 6: A Smarter Siri, Facebook-Integration and No More Google Maps first appeared on Dogtown Media.]]>
Apple announced some exciting new features for iOS 6 at the Worldwide Developers Conference today. The latest version of the mobile operating system, launching this fall, will include over 200 new features.

Siri got a lot smarter, and can now converse in Italian, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese and other new additions to its international vocabulary. Apart from the number of languages it supports, the personal assistant has also expanded its knowledge. Users can make restaurant reservations thanks to an integration with OpenTable and Yelp, or get movie reviews through Rotten Tomatoes. Siri can even tweet for you, and launch apps.

iOS 6 comes with a system-wide Facebook integration. Similar to the existing Twitter integration, users log in to their Facebook account through the iOS settings applications and are able to easily post to their account or share media with friends. Events and birthdays appear in the iOS calendar, and users can ‘like’ applications on the new App Store.

Apple has added a very handy ‘do not disturb’ feature to the new update. Your phone will be quiet during meetings or overnight, but you can exclude certain groups of people meaning their calls will always come through. The feature also gives you the option to let your phone ring anyway if someone calls twice within three minutes.

iOS 6 makes it easier to share your Photo Streams with others. Choose a photo or an album, and friends will receive a notification. The social networking style serve lets users comment on and like photos.

A new app called ‘Passbook’ allows users to collect and store boarding passes, store cards, movie tickets and anything else you would normally have to print out. Once you’re near the place you would use it, Passbook pulls up the relevant card. The app updates automatically, which means your boarding pass will always display the latest gate change.

The rumors were already going around, and Apple did indeed ditch Google Maps for its latest iOS update. Its own mapping solution includes Yelp integration, crowd-sourced traffic information with real-time data, and ‘Flyover’, which shows 3-D models of geographical features and buildings. Siri will be able to tell your kids if you’re ‘almost there’ and guides you to wherever you want to go with turn-by-turn directions.

iOS 6 was released as a developer beta shortly after WWDC concluded. As Los Angeles iPhone app developers we’re going to be jumping right in and playing around with some of these new features. We plan to immediately start integrating new Facebook sharing features into our applications and see many opportunities to leverage the new maps API.

Looks like the DogTown crew will miss out on Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. Ticket sales for the event opened up at 5:30 a.m. PST. today and sold out within two hours, while the entire west coast was fast asleep.

Apple announced the conference would take place June 11-15 this morning. Tickets were priced at $1,600 each. It is expected Apple will announce the new features of iOS 6 on opening day, as well as the details on OS X Mountain Lion.

Developers like us in L.A. area and of course Northern California were highly disappointed by the news. On the conference webpage, Apple apologizes for the tickets being sold out. “We’ll be posting videos of all our sessions shortly after the conference, so everyone can take advantage of great WWDC content for free.”

If you’re still enrolled in college as well as in one of Apple’s developer programs, you have a second shot at visiting the conference, and it’s free too. Students have until May 2 to apply for a scholarship.

Dogtown Media is a Los Angeles iPhone app development start-up with four titles successfully launched in the iTunes app store.
